Pretty simple: Because using the browser's own player would be to easy. It's like loading a json file that then parses the html in the browser again.

People do stupid things.

Browsers' native players work great! ...if your video needs are extremely naive/limited. If you want to support modern streaming protocols like HLS and DASH, or really do anything whatsoever but play back a subset of mp4s, you're out of luck.
